I am tempted to think that the idea of autonomy is bound up with a kind of narrowing or particularisation of the subject. The more I enter into an activity with the whole of myself, the less right have we to say that I am autonomous. (In this sense, the philosopher is less autonomous than the pure scientist, and the pure scientist himself less so than the technician.) Autonomy is bound up with the existence of a sphere of activity which is strictly circumscribed. If this is so, the whole of the Kantian ethic rests upon a monstrous contradiction, a sort of speculative aberration.
